Meet the team: Project Manager, Jack. Posted by Jack Gladen, 02 Dec 2019

For People

From Technical Support to Project Management, Jack tells us about the training he's received and how that's helped him progress to where he is today.

Pursuing a career in IT

Before joining Bistech, I studied Ancient History & Archaeology at Exeter University. My degree offered me the chance to specialise in periods of history that I found interesting, as well as an opportunity to study abroad for a year at Radboud University in the Netherlands, which was a fantastic experience. Even though I love history, technology has always been a personal interest of mine, which is why I decided to pursue a career in IT after graduation.

My degree background meant I had little technical experience, but Bistech was prepared to invest in me. It was the perfect opportunity for me to start my career and learn as much as possible. Since joining in 2017 as a Technical Support Engineer, I’ve developed my business relationship skills and grown my knowledge of a diverse range of technologies, which has enabled me to progress into my current role after 18 months.

A day in the life…

My workday involves managing the implementation of new business technology solutions and upgrades or changes for our customers. We liaise with customers to understand their needs and manage resources so we can provide their tailored solution. When a project is delivered and we quickly see the customer benefitting, it’s really rewarding.

Training opportunities

I’ve been on several courses to specialise in our telephony platforms and I’m now studying towards my first Cisco and Microsoft 365 qualifications. Bistech also invests in soft-skills training programs which have improved the way I interact and build relationships with customers.

Top tips for future applicants

No matter what your professional background or previous work experience is, a career in technology can be for anyone. Don’t be afraid to take a step out of your comfort zone because the skills you learn from your degree or previous roles will translate to other professions.
